🧳 Is It Safe in Russia for Foreigners in 2025?
What the Media Won’t Tell You
Spoiler alert: If you’re not a spy, protester, or journalist investigating state secrets—you’ll probably be just fine.
As geopolitical tension surges across headlines and diplomats duel in soundbites, many Westerners are left wondering: Is Russia safe for foreigners? Stories swirl—from alleged police harassment to outright abductions by state agents. But how much of that is true? Let’s separate myth from reality.
📢 The Media Echo Chamber
Western media has, since early 2022, painted Russia as a dystopian state where foreigners risk arbitrary detention or worse. This echoes Cold War-era fears, but modern expat life tells a different story.
“My wife is in a panic that we’ll be attacked or kidnapped by Russian police or military. She hears scary stories from her friends—from who knows where.”
This concern is common. But is it founded?
✅ Reality on the Ground
For most expats, Russia is stable, calm, and quite safe, with the same common-sense precautions you’d apply anywhere:
Police checks: Legal and usually non-threatening. Carry a copy of your passport and visa.
Military presence: Minimal in civilian areas unless you’re near sensitive regions.
Street safety: Cities like Moscow, Kazan, and Krasnodar rank safer than many major U.S. cities.
🤔 Who Should Worry?
Only those involved in:
Political activism
Unregistered journalism
Criminal activity (especially narcotics)
Even then, the system follows legal channels, albeit slowly and in Russian.

🌐 Why the Fear Exists
These fears are driven less by experience and more by narrative ecosystems:
Media overexposure to worst-case stories
Geopolitical framing of Russia as inherently hostile
Secondhand gossip replacing firsthand knowledge
A study by the Shorenstein Center at Harvard shows consistent bias in Western media portrayals of Russia since 2022.
🔍 Bottom Line
If you:
Register with your embassy (U.S. STEP) if you’re really fearful (we know nobody who actually does this),
Learn basic Russian politeness,
Obey local laws,
…you’ll likely find yourself treated with curiosity or friendliness—not hostility.
